Thinking aloud about TikTok

I've been trying to articulate what it is about that app that really puts me off [aside from how much of a attention sink it is], and I think it can be boiled down to "this is an advertising space disguised as a social space", and to some degree I think that shows through in the way, at least from what I've seen, some of the even "regular" people assemble their videos and portray themselves there. Granted, Instagram's got the same characteristic imo, but--

--TikTok feels like its on turbo?

I also really dislike how I had to make the process of making my stuff into a marketable spectacle in of itself, bit that's a whole other thing.

This is also an incomplete thought, but its been on the mind little as other trends online have me figuring out how to adapt without loosing my mind in the process lol

re: Thinking aloud about TikTok

@tombofnull I find it really hard to look at tiktok because it feels like I'm... being very very closely used/scrutinized and that they'll very aggressively use my data, much more so than even their competitors.

I'm also just generally wary of things like Instagram that have a tendency to warp our sense of reality by creating these artificially "perfect" spaces that don't reflect real human appearances and experiences.

re: Thinking aloud about TikTok

@zkat Same and Same. every time I catch myself feel like im "behind" or "missing" something I have to remind myself that I'm looking at a highly curated, fantastical construction designed to make me part with my cash or steal my attention to later make cash. oh, and a number of folks are just rich, not interesting lol

cyberpunk dystopia stuff but with a lot less neon.

re: Thinking aloud about TikTok

@tombofnull “are you interesting or just rich” is the same as “are you fashionable or just skinny?”

re: Thinking aloud about TikTok

@zkat YES EXACTLY

Thinking aloud about TikTok

@tombofnull it's today's pinnacle of realtime AI recommendation tuning. Creators truly are just ... I dunno, a color of filament in a 3D printer. An input, a commodity, so the machine has more ways to output a momentary whim of dopamine. Optimized for revenue, as you said.

@aobscure yuuuuppp, that's a pretty good metaphor. which is funny, bc if it werent for the creatives on these platforms, said platforms prob would trap so many ppl into them to make their big money bucks off of lol
